Eyelid correction

Droopy eyelids, a gloomy look, a tired appearance? With an eyelid correction, you can get the clear look of yesteryear back. Upper eyelid corrections, in particular, are performed on a large scale, usually for cosmetic reasons.
Sometimes the hanging of the upper eyelid is so extreme that it obstructs vision. In that case, there is a medical indication and sometimes the costs are reimbursed by the health insurance. However, very strict criteria apply to this. Reimbursement is sometimes also possible for a congenital defect or chronic condition. Inquire in advance with your health insurance whether reimbursement of the procedure abroad is possible in your situation.

What is an eyelid correction?

An eyelid correction is a relatively simple procedure in which excess skin or subcutaneous fat tissue is removed from heavy, sagging eyelids or fat pockets around the eyes. Various techniques can be applied, depending on correction of the upper or lower eyelids. Scars are hardly visible later. On the upper eyelid, the scar falls exactly in the eyelid crease, and on a lower eyelid, just below the lash line.

The treatment

If you are taking blood-thinning medication, such as aspirin, you must stop using it at least one week in advance.

The procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon. Before treatment can take place, your health, medical background, and medication use will be discussed with you. Based on your wishes, the surgeon will determine whether an eyelid correction is suitable for you or whether a combination with another treatment is better. The treatment method to be applied, the anesthesia technique, the result, possible risks, and aftercare will be discussed in detail with you. A companion from Smile Partners is present at the consultation. After this, you make the final decision whether you want the procedure.

The surgeon marks on the eyelid how much skin needs to be removed. You will not feel anything from the procedure. You can choose local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or sedation. Sometimes general anesthesia is necessary for a lower eyelid correction. After the sutures are applied, the eyelids are cooled with ice compresses or an ice mask.

After treatment

If the treatment was carried out under local anesthesia, you can return to your hotel immediately after cooling your eyelids. If the procedure was performed under general anesthesia or sedation, you will have to stay in the clinic for some time until the surgeon and anesthesiologist consider it safe for you to leave the clinic. Of course, Smile takes care of your transport from the clinic to your hotel.

The postoperative pain in the first few days is minimal. If necessary, a painkiller can be taken. The further recovery is painless. After general anesthesia, you must take absolute rest for the first few days but also move by, for example, taking a walk. Too little movement increases the risk of thrombosis.

After the procedure, your eyes are swollen and show bruises around them. These usually disappear after one or a few weeks. You may perform light activities after one week but avoid bending or lifting. The sutures will be removed after one week. Physical exertion is allowed after one month.

The result

After the swelling and bruises have disappeared, the effect of the procedure is already visible. However, the definitive result is only visible after a few months. You look years younger. The result of the treatment is not permanent. On average, the duration is 5 to 15 years.

Risks and Complications

Complications are rare. As with other surgical procedures, there is a very small risk of thrombosis or an allergic reaction. Occasionally, bleeding occurs, or despite working in a sterile environment, an infection may occur. This usually does not have a negative effect on the final result of the eyelid correction. The risk of eye damage is extremely low. If the skin is too tightly stretched and does not relax, this can be corrected with a minor adjustment.
