Breast augmentation

A breast augmentation is a major surgery performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. The breasts are enlarged from the inside out by placing a natural-feeling implant. This results in larger and firmer breasts. If the breasts are too saggy, this can only be corrected with a breast lift. This can optionally be combined with a breast augmentation.

The most important thing is your choice of a safe type of implant (with a fixed silicone filling). The total treatment duration is approximately 15 days. If you use blood-thinning medication, you must stop using it at least one week in advance. If you smoke, you must stop at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after the surgery.

First, the plastic surgeon discusses your health, medical background and medication use with you. The surgeon determines whether a breast augmentation is suitable for you and can meet your wishes and whether, for example, (a combination with) a breast lift is a better alternative. The details of the treatment, the result, the possible risks and the aftercare are extensively discussed with you. The surgeon explains the pros and cons of the different types of implants, the technique used to place them and advises you on the size and type of implant. The surgeon marks where the incisions will be made on the breast. After the implants are placed, the skin is stitched. The surgery is performed under anesthesia and takes about 1 hour.

You need to stay in the clinic for a while. You are supervised by a nurse, the surgeon and the anesthesiologist. If necessary, a drain is placed to drain wound fluid after the surgery. Usually, the drains can be removed after 24 to 48 hours. You leave the clinic when the surgeon and anesthesiologist find it responsible. In the first few days, you may experience some discomfort. There may be bruises and significant swelling. These gradually disappear in 2 to 6 weeks. You will be given painkillers and medication to minimize the swelling. You should rest for the first week and avoid putting pressure on your breasts.

In the first few weeks, you must wear a firm sports bra to support your breasts and sometimes an elastic band. The doctor will tell you how long this is necessary. Avoid physical exertion in the first few weeks.
After about 2 weeks, the stitches are removed. After 3 weeks, you can resume light activities, and after about 6 weeks, you can be fully active again.

In the first few months, the scars are still fiery in color but gradually become less visible. After a year, there are hardly any visible white lines left. In the first year, you must not expose the scars to the sun. Even after that, you must cover or protect them with a very high factor. The nipples are initially numb or very sensitive. Normal feeling almost always returns.”The final result is already visible after 3 months. The end result is permanent. Full breastfeeding usually remains possible.

As with any surgery, general complications can also occur after breast augmentation, such as an allergic reaction, poor wound healing, bleeding, or, despite sterile working, an infection. However, this is rare. There is a very small risk of thrombosis or risks associated with anesthesia.

Sometimes, the capsule that forms naturally around the implant after the procedure contracts too much. This can be corrected. The prosthesis must be replaced if the outer layer wrinkles or tears. There is a small risk of breast asymmetry or permanent numbness.”
