Breast reduction

Heavy breasts can cause less freedom of movement and back and neck pain.
If the breasts are severely sagging, the skin underneath can become infected. Breast reduction is a solution in such cases.

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is a significant surgical procedure. A part of the skin and glandular tissue at the bottom of the breasts is removed, and the nipples are lifted higher. The surgery results in smaller and nicely shaped breasts, but unfortunately, it leaves scars: around the nipple, from the nipple downwards, and in the fold beneath the breast.

The treatment

The entire treatment duration takes about 15 days. If you use blood-thinning medication, you need to stop using it at least a week before the surgery. If you smoke, you should stop smoking at least four weeks before and four weeks after the surgery.

First, the plastic surgeon discusses your health, medical history, and medication use with you. The surgeon examines whether breast reduction is suitable for you and whether it can meet your needs and if, for example, a breast lift (or a combination of both) is a better alternative. The details of the treatment, the possible risks, and aftercare are extensively discussed with you. The Smile Partners guide is present during the consultation. Then you decide definitively whether you want to undergo the treatment.

Usually, photographs are taken before the procedure. The surgery is performed under anesthesia by an experienced plastic surgeon and takes about 1.5 hours. The surgeon will try to make the breasts as evenly shaped as possible. Subcutaneous stitches are applied.

After the treatment

You must stay in the clinic for some time. You will be accompanied by a nurse, the surgeon, and the anesthesiologist. If necessary, a drain is placed after the surgery to remove wound fluid or some blood leakage. Usually, the drains can be removed after 24 to 48 hours. You leave the clinic when the surgeon and anesthesiologist consider it responsible. Of course, Smile Partners will arrange your transportation to your hotel.

During the first few days, your breasts will be swollen and have bruises. These will usually gradually disappear from the third day onwards. During the first week, you should rest and avoid putting pressure on the treated areas. You will be given painkillers and medication to minimize swelling.

During the first four weeks, you should wear a supportive sports bra both day and night to give your breasts as much support as possible. Avoid physical exertion during the first weeks.

The stitches are usually removed after about a week. You can resume light daily activities after three weeks and perform heavier work and exercise after about six weeks.

The result

During the first few months, the scars will still be reddish. They will gradually acquire the color of the skin, but they will never become entirely invisible. In the first year, you should not expose the scars to the sun, and even after that, you should cover or protect them with a high factor.

The nipples can be numb or very sensitive. Normal feeling almost always returns. Sometimes the change is permanent.

The final result can only be assessed after a year. The result is not permanent. The breasts may become somewhat saggy again due to aging over the years, or they may become heavier due to pregnancy or weight gain.

Risks and complications

As with any surgery, general complications may occur after breast reduction, such as an allergic reaction, poor wound healing, bleeding, or, despite sterile working, an infection. However, this is rare. There is a very small risk of thrombosis or risks associated with anesthesia.

Specific complications may occur, such as skin deviation or wrinkling around the nipples (recovery takes a bit longer, but it has no consequences for the function of the nipple). In rare cases, the blood supply to the nipple may be compromised, which can lead to partial or total nipple loss. It is important to discuss all potential risks and complications with your surgeon before undergoing the procedure.
