What is a facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin by removing wrinkles and folds on the face or neck. Usually, subcutaneous tissue layers are also lifted. Nowadays, a facelift can be performed less invasively than before, thanks to new techniques. The surgery is less traumatic, shorter in duration, leaves fewer scars, and has a shorter recovery time than the traditional method. A facelift is performed by a plastic surgeon.

The treatment

If you smoke, it is essential to quit smoking for several weeks before and after the treatment. If you take blood thinners, you must stop taking them at least one week before.

During the initial consultation, your health, medical history, and any medication use will be discussed. Based on this and your wishes, the plastic surgeon will determine if a facelift is suitable for you or if another treatment method is a better option. Everything related to the facelift will be discussed in detail: how the surgery will be performed, what results you can expect, the possible risks, and aftercare. A Smile Partners guide will be present during the consultation. Then you can decide definitively if you want to undergo the operation.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or sedation. The preparation for the procedure takes about half an hour, and the procedure itself takes about two hours, depending on how extensive it it is.

After the treatment

After the procedure, you will stay in the clinic for some time. You will be assisted by a nurse, an anesthesiologist, and the surgeon until the anesthesiologist and surgeon deem it safe for you to leave the clinic. You must rest for a few days so that your body has time to recover. After a week, you can perform light activities, but you should not bend over. You should wait at least a month for physical exertion and lifting. It is essential to follow the advice of the nurse and the surgeon meticulously.

After the surgery, your face will be swollen for a while and may have bruising. Be careful when showering, the scars must remain dry until the stitches are removed, which happens after 1 to 2 weeks. It is advisable to sleep with your head slightly elevated so that there is no pressure on your face. The postoperative pain is usually manageable. Often, the discomforts such as bandages, swelling, and bruises are more significant. If necessary, you can use the pain relievers prescribed by the surgeon.

The total treatment duration, including follow-up visits, is 15 days.

The result

The tightening effect is already somewhat visible shortly after the procedure. The bruises usually disappear after 1 or 2 weeks, sometimes it takes a few weeks longer. The swelling has largely subsided after 1 or 2 weeks. Only then can the result be evaluated correctly. The scars are hidden as much as possible but may appear reddish during the first few months. Then they increasingly match the color of the skin, and eventually, a small light line remains.

The final result of the facelift is visible after about a year, when the surgical wound and subcutaneous tissue have completely healed. The effect of a facelift is not permanent. Sometimes, a new treatment is necessary after a few years.

Risks and complications

As with any surgery, complications can sometimes occur with a facelift, such as an allergic reaction to disinfectants, bleeding, or infection. Other potential risks include nerve damage, scarring, hematoma, and skin necrosis. It is important to discuss these risks with your surgeon before deciding to undergo the procedure. Your surgeon can help you understand the potential risks and develop a plan to minimize them. Additionally, following all post-operative instructions and attending all follow-up appointments can help reduce the risk of complications and ensure a successful recovery.
