Laser eye surgery

Eye laser surgery (refractive surgery) is a treatment that corrects your vision to the point where you no longer need glasses or contact lenses. It is our ambition to offer you the best result and the highest level of safety. Our eye surgeons use Lasik, the most commonly used eye laser technique worldwide to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
In nearsightedness, objects in the distance are difficult to see, the eye focuses the image in front of the retina and not directly on it. In farsightedness, objects up close are blurry, the eye focuses the image behind the retina and not directly on it. In astigmatism, the cornea does not have the same curvature everywhere, causing light to fall on more than one point on the retina, resulting in a blurry and distorted image. From the age of 18, an eye defect usually remains stable and laser eye surgery can be applied.

What is Lasik?

With the Lasik technique, the surgeon uses an advanced instrument, the microkeratome, to create a flap in the cornea. The flap is lifted and a laser beam is directed at the center of the cornea for about 50 seconds. This gives the cornea the correct curvature and corrects the eye defect. The surgeon carefully folds the flap back, which quickly adheres to the cornea without sutures. Lasik is extremely safe and reliable.

Lasik has many advantages over other methods: virtually painless after treatment, faster recovery of vision, less chance of scarring, and excellent for higher powers. However, the eye strength must have remained stable in the past year. If you are pregnant, it is better to wait for laser eye treatment. Lasik is not suitable if the cornea is too thin. Another eye laser method may be used.

Before the treatment

The laser eye treatment corrects the cornea. Contact lenses can change the shape of the cornea. It is very important that the cornea has time to return to its normal curvature. Therefore, you must not wear contact lenses for at least one week before the treatment. If you wear hard lenses, you must stop using them one month before the treatment.
On the day of the treatment, you can eat and drink normally. You should not use cream, makeup, perfume or blood-thinning medication such as aspirin.

The treatment

The total treatment has three phases: examination, surgical treatment, and aftercare. The first visit to the eye clinic takes about half a day. Smile Partners provides free transportation and stays with you throughout the entire treatment.

The examination

The health of your internal eye, conjunctiva, eyelids, iris, and lens are examined. Various tests are performed with extremely precise measuring equipment. Your glasses strength, near and far vision, eye pressure, shape and thickness of the cornea, size of the pupils in the dark, etcetera, are very accurately determined. After this, plenty of time is taken to discuss the treatment with you and answer your questions.

The surgical treatment

Your eyes are anesthetized with eye drops. The Lasik treatment takes only 4 to 5 minutes. You feel no pain. So, you don’t have to be afraid of the surgery. Sutures and bandaging are not necessary.

The aftercare

After the treatment, you will be asked to wait in the waiting room for at least half an hour. Then, the eye doctor performs another check-up. Eye drops are prescribed that you should use for about three weeks. After this, you can leave the clinic. For the first few hours, you may have a slightly burning sensation or watery eyes. However, painkillers are rarely needed. The first day, your vision may still be blurry, and you should not drive yourself. Make sure no water gets in your eyes.

Usually, your eyesight will have sufficiently recovered after the first day, and you can resume your daily life without needing to wear glasses or contact lenses. Sometimes it can take a few days or weeks for the cornea to become completely clear again.

On the first or second day after the surgery, Smile Partners will bring you back to the eye clinic for a second follow-up appointment. After this, the eye doctor may perform a final check-up if necessary. They will advise you on any further check-ups, which can also be done at a clinic in the Netherlands. Use the prescribed eye drops daily and do not rub your eyes for the first two weeks.

Duration of stay

Plan to spend at least four days for the treatment. For extra safety, or to enjoy a relaxing vacation after the treatment, you can choose to stay longer.
